France, C.1950s - 1960s

A refined pair of French wall sconces by Maison Lancel, dating from the 1950s to 1960s. Elegant, warm and beautifully proportioned, these wall lights combine polished brass, rich wood detailing and softly flared opal glass shades in a classic French torchiere form.

Each sconce features a circular brass backplate with architectural ring detailing, a slender torch-form body and a tapered wooden lower section finished with a brass spear point. The opal glass shades have a graceful flared silhouette, diffusing the light with a soft, flattering glow. The result is quietly glamorous lighting with a distinctly French sense of refinement.

The pairing of brass, wood and opaline glass is strongly associated with Maison Lancel lighting of this period, offering a beautiful balance of decorative richness and mid-century elegance. These sconces would be perfect placed either side of a bed, mirror, fireplace, doorway or hallway console, bringing a cosy and atmospheric glow to bedrooms, dressing rooms, sitting rooms and boutique interiors.

No rewiring has been undertaken. The sconces are currently fitted with SBC holders and wired for the UK. One sconce has a plain brass band, possibly a later replacement, though it remains visually harmonious and does not detract from the overall elegance of the pair. The metalwork is in very good vintage condition, with minimal visible patina and only light, age-related surface wear.
